Origin: Free Kontakt Instruments Built From Modular Synthesizers

Origin: Free Kontakt Instruments Built From Modular Synthesizers

The Foundry

Some of our favorite sounds start with a patch, a few cables, and no real idea where things are going to end up.

That’s the idea behind Origin, our free series of Kontakt instruments built around experimentation, hardware, and sounds with plenty of character left intact.

For the first release, we went deep into modular synthesis.

Origin: Bundle v1 brings together three Kontakt instruments created from original modular and Eurorack performances: Mod-Perc, Mod-Keys, and Mod-Tones.

Every sound started with real hardware before being recorded, edited, processed, and turned into something playable.

And the entire bundle is free.

Starting With the Hardware

The first three Origin instruments were created from performances on Nathan Fields’ personal modular rig, recorded at 96 kHz.

We wanted to keep as much of that original modular character as possible.

That means these sounds aren't designed to be perfectly polished or overly cleaned up. Small artifacts, movement, grit, instability, and unexpected changes are part of what makes the source material interesting in the first place.

The challenge was figuring out how to preserve those qualities while turning the recordings into instruments that are actually useful when you're writing.

So we took the original performances and started chopping, processing, stretching, layering, and shaping them into loops, one-shots, pulses, textures, and tonal elements.

The result became Origin.

Origin: Mod-Perc

Mod-Perc takes modular synthesis into the rhythmic side of things.

It’s built around raw modular percussion, warped loops, unstable pulses, and rhythmic textures created through Eurorack hardware.

Voltage-triggered transients and percussive sounds pulled from wavetables were recorded and shaped into playable patterns that retain some of the unpredictable character of the original patches.

Some sounds are more controlled. Others have a little more grit and movement.

They can work on their own or sit underneath traditional drums and percussion to add another layer of rhythm and texture.

Origin: Mod-Keys

Next is Mod-Keys, our take on a modular piano.

The original source was transformed into four playable voicings that move from cleaner, more intimate sounds into dreamier and more cinematic territory.

Along the way, the waveforms were pushed into grains, manipulated in time and pitch, and processed with low-fi textures.

There’s still something familiar underneath it all, but the modular processing takes the instrument somewhere different from a traditional piano library.

Origin: Mod-Tones

Mod-Tones goes further into the atmospheric side of the modular rig.

This instrument is built around granular pads, drones, loops, and tonal textures captured from evolving Eurorack patches.

Oscillators, filters, noise, and modulation paths interact throughout the original performances, creating sounds that naturally shift and move over time.

Those recordings were then shaped into playable material for scoring, production, sound design, or anywhere a track needs a little extra movement in the background.

Keeping the Imperfections

One of the main ideas behind Origin is pretty simple: don't remove everything that made the original recording interesting.

With modular hardware, things aren't always perfectly predictable.

That's part of the fun.

A patch can drift. A texture can change slightly. An artifact can appear that you never planned for and end up becoming the best part of the recording.

We wanted those details to survive the process of turning these sounds into Kontakt instruments.

Origin gives you enough control to shape the material around your own production, while keeping the personality of the original source underneath.

Three Instruments, One Free Bundle

Origin: Bundle v1 brings the first three releases together in one download:

  • Mod-Perc focuses on percussion, pulses, loops, and rhythmic modular textures.
  • Mod-Keys turns modular source material into four playable keyboard voicings ranging from intimate to cinematic.
  • Mod-Tones explores evolving pads, drones, loops, and tonal textures.

Together, they cover three pretty different sides of the same modular setup.

Where Origin Goes Next

Origin started with modular synthesis, but we don't necessarily want to put too many rules around where it can go.

The series is our place to experiment.

Future instruments could continue deeper into modular hardware, or they could start with completely different instruments, recording techniques, and sound sources.

What matters is that there’s something interesting at the source and a reason to turn it into an instrument.

If an experiment gives us something we genuinely want to use, Origin gives us a place to share it.

Origin Is Free

The entire Origin Series is free, no strings attached.

It's our way of sharing some of the experiments and sounds happening behind the scenes at The Foundry, while hopefully giving composers and producers a few useful new tools along the way.

Origin: Bundle v1 includes Mod-Perc, Mod-Keys, and Mod-Tones, all available together as a free download.

Plug them in, mess with them, and see where they take you.
